OPEN EXHIBITION (08.10 – 21.10) at Injera Restaurant and Lounge, Cologne https://injera-restaurant.de/. From the embers of a turbulent past to the portrait of a bright future, Chidi Kubwiri’s story is one of grit, resilience, massive talent, and of course, it was written in the stars. From the trauma of the Biafran War to a studio in the former industrial complex called “WALZWERK” in Germany, which is now a destination for commerce and culture, Chidi’s artistry began at the age of 5-6 years old. Since then, Kwubiri can already look back on a large number of national and international solo and group exhibitions, many of which were held in Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and the USA. He has also received various accolades and prizes for art promotion. One of his career’s high points to date was being selected in 2016 to create the MISEREOR hunger cloth, which is a part of a 40-year tradition, for the international MISEREOR Lenten campaigns 2017–2018.

Kwubiri finds inspiration for his art in his memories of the people and culture of Nigeria, where he was raised. His subjects include serious subjects like female genital mutilation as well as lighter recollections like ritual dances and masks. Even though he deals with such weighty subjects, his style is still lively, colorful, and appealing; in fact, he says that it is meant to pull viewers in and encourage them to take a closer look at his work.

Speaking of looking back, on the 7th, we opened our doors to you with our first ever African Art vernissage in Europe. Chidi worked with us, as we spotlighted him as the first of many.His works will be displayed at Injera Restaurant, Köln, Germany from the 7th of October to the 21st of this month. Come and marvel at his works as you enjoy a plate of African goodness during this period. The restaurant opens at 6pm CET every Monday to Saturday, 3pm CET every Sunday.
